Cozumel, Mexico is truly one of the world's best diving destinations. Full of crystal clear water, amazing marine life, colorful reefs, and fun tunnel swim throughs; it's no wonder why we love leading groups down there multiple times a year. Plus, being our neighbor to the south, it is so easy to get to! We could go on and on about Cozumel, but here are our top 6 reasons to book your next diving adventure in Cozumel.
Reason #1: The 2nd Largest Barrier Reef in the World!
Everyone knows that the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the world's largest reef system, but did you know that the second biggest reef in the world is found right off the coast of Mexico, Belize, and Honduras?!? The tiny island of Cozumel sits right along that reef and offers some of the world's best reef diving!
Reason #2: Jacques Cousteau Loved Cozumel
That's right; in 1961, Jacques Cousteau declared Cozumel as one of the most beautiful scuba diving areas of the world! And who would doubt Cousteau's expertise? He knew underwater beauty when he saw it, and Cozumel is sure not to disappoint. Boasting beautiful corals, enormous barrel sponges, tons of fish, loads of nurse sharks and rays, gorgeous turtles, and the list goes on!
Reason #3: Wall Diving
Need we say more? Cozumel is arguably the best place for wall diving in the world. There's nothing like swimming to the end of a reef and then just seeing it plunge down, down, down into the inky blue depths of the ocean. There is something mystical about cruising along a beautiful coral wall with nothing but the deep blue sea beneath you, and Cozumel is littered with these amazing wall dives.
Reason #4: It's History
We know, history can be super boring to many of you; however, Cozumel's rich Mayan history is pretty fascinating. Many divers miss out on the lesser known Mayan ruins found on the island called San Gervacio. What's cool is that every Mayan woman would journey to this sacred site at least once in their lifetime to worship the goddess of fertility, Ixchel.
Reason #5: The "Other Side" of the Island
Some divers who come to Cozumel completely miss the most beautiful top-side part of the island. The locals call it "the other side" of the island. While all of the diving, hotels and the town of San Miguel sit on the western side, the eastern (or windward) side of the island is mostly uninhabited but beautiful. It is full of soft, white sandy beaches, azure blue water, and lots of waves. Between dives, it's fun to rent a little scooter and cruise over to relax on this side of the island at one of the handful of beach bars along the road.
Reason #6: Unlimited Shore Diving
Although there will be plenty of amazing boat diving going on in Cozumel, most of the resorts offer you access to unlimited shore diving right off of the hotel. There is plenty to see just off of the shoreline, especially at night! So while you're there, you'll have ample opportunity to rack up as many dives as you want.
Surely we could go on and on with a longer list of all the MANY reasons why we love diving in Cozumel, but we hope this list is enough to pique your interest. We run several dive trips to Cozumel each year so keep an eye on our website for our next trip over there and be sure to sign up quickly, as they do fill up fast!
